Enhance Your Spirits with Our 100-Year-Old American Chestnut Barrel
This barrel is crafted from rare, 100-year-old American Chestnut, sourced from reclaimed wood in Ohio. A customer provided this incredible material, salvaged from barns and churches that once stood along the country side but are now vanishing at an alarming rate. This wood carries a deep history, and now, it has a second life, infusing your spirits with its unique character.
American Chestnut was once a dominant species in the U.S., prized for its durability and fine grain before it was nearly wiped out by blight. Now, working with this wood is a rare opportunity, and we're excited to explore its potential for aging spirits.
If this barrel doesn’t perform as expected, we’ll replace it with a standard oak barrel. Your participation in this experiment isn’t just appreciated, it’s essential in discovering how this historic wood shapes aging.
Important Hydration Note:
This wood has been found to be very dry, meaning you’ll need to hydrate the barrel longer than usual before filling it with spirits. I highly recommend filling the barrel with water for at least a week before use. Initial leaking is more common than normal, but once properly soaked, the barrel will hold tight and continue aging your spirits for years.
Features:
- 100-Year-Old American Chestnut imparts a distinct flavor profile, different from oak, with warm, toasty notes and a hint of natural sweetness.
- Stainless Steel Can and Spigot provide an inert environment, ensuring the wood is the only flavor influence.
- White Oak Bung and Beeswax Seal create a tight, secure closure for optimal aging.
Capacity:
With a 1.8-gallon (6.5 L) capacity, this barrel is ideal for achieving exceptional results.
Extras:
Includes the bung used for testing and an additional new unused bung.

This barrel arrived without any issue. Same as they all have. The Chestnut smelled delicious. I couldn't tell if that was from the toasting and charring or from the wood. Either way, it was nice. I put a 118 proof apple brandy into it after prepping it as recommended. It sealed up without any issues. Time will tell. So far, so good!
This barrel looks and smells amazing, I can't wait to see how it does.
I won’t be able to provide a full performance review for several years but my chestnut barrel arrived promptly and very well packaged. The craftsmanship is wonderful and I feel privileged to have an opportunity to experiment with this rare and unique wood.
Currently soaking/hydrating as recommended. No leaks or issues so far. My only concern is what to fill it with.... Thank you for the opportunity to use something this unique!!!
