Barrel Preservation Mix

Keep your barrel clean, protected, and ready for its next fill with our pre-measured Barrel Preservation Mix.

This blend of potassium metabisulfite and citric acid helps prevent mold, bacteria, and spoilage during long-term storage. Each packet is measured for 2 gallons (8 liters) of water and will keep your barrel protected for up to 6 months when used as directed.

How to Use

1. Add the mix
In a well-ventilated area, open the packet and pour the contents into your barrel. Avoid breathing in the powder, and wear gloves and eye protection while handling.

2. Fill the barrel completely
Fill the barrel all the way with distilled water until there is no headspace left inside. This is important. The barrel needs to stay completely full during storage. Any headspace can allow sulfur gas to build up, which may damage stainless components.

3. Seal and store
Seal the barrel and store it until you are ready to use it again. Check the fill level from time to time and top off with distilled water if needed to keep it completely full. Rotating the barrel occasionally can also help keep everything evenly protected.

4. Rinse before use
When you are ready to fill your barrel, empty the preservation solution and rinse thoroughly with fresh water at least 2 to 3 times. The barrel should smell clean, with a light sweet note and no sulfur smell remaining.
